In 2001, Thompson moved to Colby and began teaching and administering the college's criminal justice program, a role he maintained for the next 23 years, until his passing in December 2024. He was known for his belief that education extended far beyond the classroom. A lifelong learner, he encouraged those around him to seek knowledge through both formal education and life experiences. He inspired students to travel, stay curious, and never stop growing.

Throughout his career, he had a remarkable ability to recognize the potential in others, often before they saw it in themselves. His mentorship helped students not only meet but exceed their own expectations, and his teaching style was anything but conventional.

He created an environment where students became active participants in their learning. He incorporated real-life experiences, brought in former students for mock trainings, and wove humor into his lessons. His approach transformed traditional lectures into engaging, memorable experiences that connected theory to practice.

He often reminded students that education doesn鈥檛 end with a diploma. Whether it鈥檚 a new technology, a better way to solve a problem, or a fresh perspective, there is always something to learn.

The Dr. Michael Thompson Memorial Scholarship will support students who demonstrate a passion for learning and a commitment to leadership, reflecting Thompson鈥檚 belief in the transformative power of education. His guiding principle was to help students grow from learners into leaders, empowered to achieve their fullest potential.
